International 2010 Melbourne Cup entrants are beginning to arrive on Australian shores as the countdown to the 150th Melbourne Cup jump hits 10 weeks exactly.
Imposing, formerly trained by Sir Michael Stout, will arrive on Saturday from the UK. The five-year-old will be the first 2010 Melbourne Cup hopeful to take to the newly formed Werribee quarantine facility.
Recently bought by Lloyd Williams, the two-time career winner will spend three weeks in the complex before heading to Mt Macedon where he will be prepared by Robert Hickmott.
Monday will see the first Macau-trained Melbourne Cup runner arrive in Melbourne. Luen Yat Forever, the winner of the Macau Cup, is a strong stayer and could do well in Australia this spring.
The 150th Melbourne Cup prize has drawn huge interest from international connections. Since 1993 – as more horses travelled from far and wide to fight for the Melbourne Cup title – three have been successful.
So could the 2010 Melbourne Cup be won by an international runner?
Japanese stayer Meiner Kitz and the Irish-bred, British-trained Sans Frontieres are both favourites among horseracing fans when it comes to the international contingent.
Trained by the renowned Jeremy Noseda, Sans Frontieres will jump in the 2010 Irish St Leger on September 11. After competing among some of Europe’s toughest stayers, the five-year-old will make the trip ‘Down Under’.
