International Reactions To The 2010 Melbourne Cup Weights

Reactions to the weights laid out by Racing Victoria’s Greg Carpenter for the 2010 Melbourne Cup yesterday have been thick and fast, with international Melbourne Cup entrants pleased with the outcome.

The European brood is topweighted by the Saeed Bin Suroor-trained duo of Cavalryman and Mastery at 57.5kg each, just half-a-kilo off the topweighted Alandi and Efficient.

Mastery, the 2009 Irish St Leger winner has accumulated more than $2 million in prizemoney over the course of his career, stepping up his pace for the big features.

The only European trainer to have won the Melbourne Cup prizemoney is Dermot Weld. He has a strong contingent heading for the 150th Melbourne Cup which has been topped in the weights by Rite Of Passage.

The Giant’s Causeway gelding, winner of the 2010 Ascot Gold Cup (4000m) in England earlier in the year is a solid stayer and could prove a threat if a runner in the 2010 Melbourne Cup final field.

Weld’s other hopeful; Profound Beauty has been allocated an attractive 54kg. The Danehill mare finished fifth in the 2008 Melbourne Cup results, and has placed in 15 of her 19 career-starts topped off by an impressive streak of late.

Sans Frontiers is the international favourite for the 2010 Melbourne Cup win among many horseracing fans and enthusiasts as the jump draws closer.

Trainer Jeremy Noseda has never made the trip down under but after the expected weight of 55kg was revealed for the son of Galileo, the successful trainer has made it a clear desire.

Luca Cumani is another international trainer very much hopeful to claim the 2010 Melbourne Cup trophy having come very close in previous years. His topweighted runner is Manighar, runner up in the Group Two Darley Priz Kergorlay (3000m) at 54kg.

The 2008 Melbourne Cup placegetter Bauer has received a weight of 53.5kg, while stablemate Drunken Sailor has been given an attractive weight of 53kg after an impressive win at Goodwood over the weekend.
