The international horse racing contingent will be well represented in this year’s Melbourne Cup as two more potential winners set their sites on the $6 million Australian horse racing event. Bauer and Campanologist have confirmed that they will be making the trip to Melbourne.
Bauer and Campanologist are due to arrive on October 9 as part of the final wave of international runners.
Bauer has a history with the Melbourne Cup as the grey veteran came painfully close to taking the title in 2008. He was nosed out by 2008 champion Viewed in a controversial finish. As if losing the race by such a close margin isn’t bad enough, the Luca Cumani-trained horse was sidelined for 95 weeks with a tendon injury sustained during the race. Now that the injury is well behind him, the horse is ready to give the Melbourne Cup another go. He’s had two starts in this campaign, which produced a fourth place finish in the 2200m Group 3 Dubai Duty Free Arc Trial in Newbury, England last week.
He will be joined by Campanologist who took a third place finish in the same 2200m Arc Trial event last Friday. The six-year-old bay horse also has two first place finishes in Group 1 2400m events in Germany. On the heels of a string of impressive finishes, trainer Saaed Bin Suroor confirmed that the horse would enter into quarantine in preparation for the upcoming trip to the Melbourne Cup on November 2.
The two international horses will join a number of runners from overseas. This includes Tokai Trick. The Kenji Nonaka-trained bay horse arrived on Monday and will be the first Japanese Melbourne Cup runner since 2006. Macau-trained Luen Yat Forever also arrived on Monday, and Hong Kong-trained Mr Medici is expected to arrive today. Bauer and Campanologist are due to arrive on October 9 as part of the final wave of international runners.
