The Travelling Man has staked his claim to the $1 million Blue Diamond Stakes next month by winning the 2012 Blue Diamond Preview at Caulfield racecourse yesterday.
The two-year-old Mossman colt won the race by 1.3 lengths ahead of No Smoken and Timely Truce.
It was the second career start for The Travelling Man, who finishing fourth in the Listed Inglis Debutant Stakes behind Jimando in October last year.
Trainer Matt Laurie was always confident The Travelling Man would be a classy galloper.
“He’s shown really good ability from the moment we let him down for his first gallop,” Laurie said.
“So we made sure we paid up (for the Blue Diamond Stakes).
“He was still a little bit hot behind the gates but he’ll settle down with time. He’s a very exciting horse.”
Laurie said The Travelling Man has come a long way since his first start.
“He did so much wrong at his first start but he still raced quite well,” he said.
“I went away satisfied so I was more than happy to tip him out off the back of that.
“We always thought he was good enough to contest races like this.
“He’s basically raced today like he’s trialled in the past.”
