Chris Waller has taken out the Listed Australia Day Cup 2012 at Warwick Farm yesterday with impressive stayer Wazn.
Wazn won the $100,000 race by almost a length ahead of Yulalona and Legsman in the 2,400 metre race.
It was the fifth win from 12 starts for the Whipper entire, who finished second in the Listed Gosford Cup behind Straight Albert at his previous start.
Waller was extremely happy with the win and the ride given by jockey Glyn Schofield.
“He was good today and aided by a good ride,” Waller said.
“Glyn enabled the horse to switch off early and didn’t cover any extra ground which was the plan pre-race.
“He saved ground, got into some better going then showed a good turn of foot, then held them off over the last 100m.”
Waller had been concerned with the distance of the 2012 Australia Day Cup, which was 300 metres further than he had ever travelled before.
“The going was of some concern, especially stepping up to the 2400m for the first time. He got a bit tired over the last 100m but was entitled to be and I am sure it won’t be his last win over this distance.”
Wazn has now won more than $260,000 in prize money, with his 2012 Australia Day Cup win adding another $60,000 to the kitty.
Jockey Glyn Schofield believes Wazn will continue to improve over the coming months.
“If he can mature and strengthen up and get a strong mile and a half there is no reason why he can’t improve further,” Schofield said.
“You never know with stayers. At the moment he is obviously not showing he is top class at all but he hasn’t been here for long and stayers can progress from preparation to preparation.”
