Betting

When it comes to betting on a horserace the options are endless; whether it be harness racing, steeplechasing, hurdles races or thoroughbred racing there are markets available. Experienced punters can win a lot of money on horseracing, especially if they are signed up with the best online bookmaker offering the most lucrative odds. Online betting is far easier than physical TABs with relevant information needed for a successful bet at the end of your fingers. In order to win a substantial amount on the races, a fair amount of time and effort must go in to really get the best out of the racing, and once less experienced wagerers become familiar with the types of races, horses and trainers – the money will begin to flow in.

How To Pick The Winning Punt

When it comes down to picking a winning horse for an upcoming race there are many factors to consider; previous race results, the horse’s trainer, the horse’s jockey, the barrier draw and the race type itself.

For those new to the punting game, race cards are a great way to start to understand the sport as they give an in-depth look into that specific horse’s career. The card will list the horse’s name which will have a series of numbers next to it: for example 13-4-0-3. The larger of the numbers – in this case ‘13’ is the total number of career starts the horse has had, followed by the number of placings, which is four wins, no runner ups and three thirds in the above example. This can be an invaluable tool when selecting a bet.

You may also see either the letter ‘D’ or ‘C’ next to the name of your horse. If a ‘D’ is present this means the horse has won a race over the same distance as that which you are researching, and a ‘C’ means the horse as won an event on the course which this race will take place on.

A successful trainer is successful for a reason, so if the horse you are looking at has a well respected trainer chances are they are a well-guided horse and could be a good punt. The jockey is another person in the pipelines to consider as quite often a good jockey will form a bond with a horse, and so if they have been successful in the past could be a duo to back. So make sure when considering which horse you are going to bet on that you check out the trainer and the jockey, and both of their previous runs at the racecourse your race is taking place on.

Of course, the actual race you are focusing on is one of the more integral aspects of selecting your bet. If it is a high status race of a level your horse has not yet competed in, a punt on that horse is most likely void no matter how successful it may have been in the past, as the level of competition will certainly be tougher. On the other hand, if they are competing in what may be regarded as a lead up race to a more prestigious event, the horse could be the safest bet going, and it is up to you to decide. If worst comes to worst, another way a punter can get a good feel for the winner is just to check out the odds online, with the horse with the lowest odds most likely selected as the favourite by other more experienced punters – so you could just go with the odds.
