Flight Stakes History
The Flight Stakes was first run in 1947 as a Principal race and was won by Nizam’s Ring. It became a Group 2 race in 1979 and then found Group 1 status from 1985. The event is named after the champion mare Flight, who won the Cox Plate in 1945 and 1946. In 2007 the Flight Stakes was not held due to the horse flu outbreak.
The Group 2 Furious Stakes and Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes are often stepping stones to the Flight Stakes. The Tea Rose/Flight Stakes double has been won recently by More Joyous (2009), Samantha Miss (2008), Cheeky Choice (2006) and Haha (2001). The more challenging Furious/Tea Rose/Flight Stakes Treble has been achieved by Samantha Miss (2008), Unworldy (2000), Danglissa (1999) and Sunline (1998).
