George Main Stakes History
The George Main Stakes takes its name from former Australian Jockey Club chairman George Main. It was first raced in 1945 as a Principal race over eight furlongs with Modulation the winner. In 1972 in conjunction with Australia’s adoption of the metric system the Stakes took on its current 1,600 metre distance. In 1979, the event jumped straight from Principal race to a Group 1 event. The fastest time the race has seen was run by Racing To Win in 2006 with a time of 1.33.75.
