Thousand Guineas

The Thousand Guineas is an Australian Group 1 horse race held at the Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne every October. Considered one of the best races of the year for three-year-old fillies, the thousand guineas is a feature race at the highly anticipated Caulfield Spring Racing Carnival. The Thousand Guineas takes place over 1,600 metres at set-weights and is held the Wednesday after the Caulfield Guineas, which is considered the equivalent event for colts and Geldings.

The Thousand Guineas first ran in 1946 over eight furlongs and was won by Sweet Chime. Originally a Principal race, it gained Group 1 status in 1979 and converted to 1,600 metres in 1972. Before 1987 the event ran on Caulfield Cup Day, but changed in 1987 to be held on the middle day of the Caulfield Cup.
