Turnbull Stakes History
The Turnbull Stakes, inaugurated in 1948 as a 12 furlong race, was won by Beau Gem and named in honour of the Victoria Racing Club Chairman Richard Turnbull. The race converted to 2,000 metres in 1971 in line with the adoption of the metric system. Before 2006 the race was of Group 2 status, and was originally run as a handicap race, in 1964 it was set at weight-for-age, but adopted its current structure in 1971.
