Yalumba Stakes

The Yalumba Stakes, also known as the Caulfield Stakes, is a horse race held at the Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne every October. As part of the Caulfield Racing Carnival it is held on Caulfield’s Guineas Day alongside two other Group 1 races; the Caulfield Guineas and the Toorak Handicap. Put on by the Melbourne Racing Club the 2,000 metre race under weight-for-age conditions has prize money on offer of$400,000.

Yalumba Stakes History

The Yalumba Stakes was first run in 1886 as a Principal race over nine furlongs with Isonomy the inaugural winner. For the next two years the race increased to 10 furlongs then in 1889 dropped back to the original nine furlong distance. The Yalumba stakes changed back to 10 furlongs once again in 1968 for four years, before converting to 2,000 metres in 1972, and found its Group 1 standing in 1979.
